Red Rock Hotel and Casino Las Vegas: A Healthier "Sin City" Trip

Most Sin City travelers have little interest roaming off the Strip, and who can blame them? Massive hotels, scream-worthy amusement rides, titillating shows/nightclubs and wallet-busting shopping make Las Vegas Blvd a one-of-a-kind experience.
But, what about those travelers looking for something a bit different from their Vegas escape...a bit more active...a little healthier...a bit less crowded? Red Rock Hotel and Casino in Summerlin is the perfect spot. About 20 minutes beyond the heart of Vegas, this 40-acre hotel and casino complex sprouts into the sky with the mountainous Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area as a backdrop.
The AMT team visited in January and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. After leaving our rental car keys with the valet (included in resort fee), check-in was quick and simple--unlike the long and meandering lines at many Strip hotel front desks. Our 9th floor, 1030 s.f., Signature Suite presented majestic views of the Red Rock Mountains through floor-to-ceiling windows and overlooked the 3-acre swimming pool area.
During our 3-day stay, we noted quiet corridors overnight, comfortable bedding with Egyptian cotton linens, and spacious bathrooms with separate shower-tub combinations. Kids will enjoy the wall-mounted LCD television above the tub. Morning sunrises reflecting off the Red Rock Mountain tops are breathtaking. Our only gripe is the living area's L-shaped sofa does not pull-out to a bed, which would be convenient for kids, etc. Still, the couch is large enough for sleeping--just add sheets and a few pillows.
Beyond the room, but still inside the hotel, guests can enjoy short walks to 6+ dining options, including a food court (Rubios, pizza, etc.), a Starbucks, a few upscale restaurants, and a delicious buffet. We highly recommend the buffet's carved turkey breast, steamed broccoli, and huge salad bar.
A 72-lane bowling alley, 16-theater cinema, and 50+ game arcade are also housed within the property for both adult and kid fun.
Gamblers are not left out of the action either. A huge sports book, thousands of slot machines, and many card tables adorn the casino. We especially appreciated the minimal second-hand smoke in the air. While it's occasionally noticeable, the smoke is rarely as thick as the Strip hotel gambling floors.
Red Rock's real draw, however, is its proximity to the outdoor canyon trails. Horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking, are easily accompished through the miles of dirt trails that are convenient to the hotel. Talk to the concierge for help with arranging bike rentals and horses.
Sweat-fiends not wanting to venture outdoors can enjoy Red Rock's fitness center and spa. Workouts do not cost extra (included in resort fee), but the available hours are somewhat limited--5a to 7p. Fabulous Woodway Treadmills line the window-wall and face the pool deck along with neighboring elliptical machines and bikes. Plenty of strength equipment also makes this gym one to appreciate.
