Silver The Dylan

Area: Amsterdam

As one of Amsterdam's most expensive hotels, guests of The Dylan should arrive with high expectations. The boutique property (41 rooms) is certainly modern, edgy and stylish, but it stays clear of being overbearing or tacky. We like what we found at The Dylan. We're just not certain it's worth the steep fare.

Each room is individually designed and decorated, ranging from the flamboyant Raspberry Red quarters to the more sedate Kimono suites. All bestow modern technology, comfortable bedding and upscale baths with limestone features. Some include views of the beautiful canal which flows past the property's front door.

Due to its intimate size, Dylan could have passed on an on-site gym, but we credit management for outfitting a small workout space with three newer Technogym cardio machines and a multigym weight-station. Dumbbells would be a useful addition to the facility, and wouldn't require much room. Hotel staff recommends guests head to Splash Healthclub, since admittedly the on-site gym is small. €20 gets you in Splash, just a half-mile away, for the day.

Commuter bike rentals are conveniently available via the concierge (€25/day). Joggers best option is the nearby Vondelpark about 10 minutes at a moderate pace. Lap swimmers can find competitive-quality lanes at Het Marnix.
