Area: Downtown

This old and historic community center shows its age in some areas, but has received a facelift in others. The downstairs cardio area is the facility's best feature and sports new Life Fitness treadmills, Precor ellipticals, and a few recumbent bikes. There is plenty of strength equipment upstairs as well, but it reminds us of a high school gym from the 1970s - short on ambiance and a lack of newer machines. New StarTrac spin bikes are set up in a living room-type space off the lobby/reception area, likely one of the most unique spin "arrangements" you'll ever experience.

Lap swimmers have an option here too. At 20 yards, the four lanes are somewhat shorter than we and most fish-like friends prefer, but you will find a bright space, floating lines, bottom stripes, and backstroke flags. Toys (kickboards and pull-buoys) are also offered.

Bottom line: For a cardio or strength workout likely you will be happier making the 10-minute trek to Arena District Athletic Club. Swimmers staying at the clustered convention center hotels may appreciate this Y's convenience versus the  Columbus Aquatic Center or The Ohio State Recreational Pool. $15 gets you in the door. They have a "Try the Y" link on their website. We think it's worth a shot for a free day pass.
