This hotel is likely not as familiar as those with an international brand, but athletic-minded travelers should certainly consider it, especially those desiring convenient (walkable) access to London's financial district.
While the hotel's common areas resemble most other upscale properties, attractive furnishings, conservative yet warm color tones and friendly faces staffing the front desk. The Grange's 307 guestrooms are unique. Soaring floor to ceiling windows welcome natural light into the brightly decorated quarters. 24-hour room service is available for late night cravings. High speed internet access is also supplied ($ fee).
The best feature of Grange City is its lower level gym, lap pool and indoor golf simulator. Guests receive complimentary access to both. The fitness center's hardwood floors, mirrored walls and recessed lighting provide a comforting aura. Technogym cardio and weight machines fill the 500 square-foot room along with a wide ranging dumbbell set and rarely-found free weights including a Smith machine. Squats, bench press, curls, you name it, you can do it here.
Grange's 25-meter pool may not look like a lapper but it is. The support columns and low ceiling are deceiving but we assure you that three lanes of varying widths are roped off (no bottom stripes) to guide swimmers from end to end. We didn't spot any kickboards or pull-buoys and the depth is somewhat shallow so we can't give this pool our top rating. However, it is one of only three or four hotel water boxes in London where lap swimmers can actually do their thing. And you can't beat the convenience.
But if you fancy a trek for a 50m pool, then head to London Fields Lido where 50 meters and 8 lanes await.
Runners desiring an outdoor route should head to the banks of the Thames.
