Climb Camelback Mountain

Paradise Valley, AZ 85253

Area: Scottsdale

If you are looking for a unique cross training opportunity then a hike to the top of this "Mountain" is in order.  This 2704ft peak is located with in a short drive of most of the Phoenix hotels and provides 2 trail options for a challenging workout.  Make sure to wear sunscreen, good sneakers/trail shoes and bring plenty of water.  If you are planning a late afternoon ascent, be cognizant of what time the sun will set as descending without daylight would be very difficult and you don't want to make the local news for being rescued by helicopter (don't be that guy). Average ascent/descent time is approximately 1.5 hours total so plan accordingly and enjoy.  Both trails have some very rocky areas...

Trail Options & Directions:

1. Echo Canyon -- 1.2 miles and more intense. Ascent is 1,280 feet.  If you are a novice, the hike can take nearly 3 hours.  Experienced hikers will round trip it in about 1.5 hours. Enter at Echo Canyon Parkway east of Tatum Blvd. off of McDonald Dr. Parking is VERY limited especially on weekends when you may even have to wait.

2. Cholla Trail -- 1.6  miles and less difficult, but still not suited to newbies.  The elevation gain is 1,200 feet.  Surprisingly, it's less crowded too.  Park on Invergofdon Road (aka 64th St.) and walk up Cholla St about 1/4 to 1/2 mile.  There is no trailhead parking, just street parking.

Trails open sunrise to sunset (or 7p at latest)
