One of the closest hotels to the airport, and fresh off a multimillion dollar renovation, Hilton Garden Inn is also advantageously located for runners. While this hotel is not quite as close to Umstead Park as Embassy Suites, it is still only a 5-minute car ride. From HGI, hop in the car and drive east to the next highway exit (Harrisson Ave.) and turn left, voila, you're there. Welcome to 20+ miles of jogging trails and paths.
However, if you only have time for a 3 to 4 mile route, you may not need to get in the car at all. Another jogging route that starts from HGI's front door is available, Lake Crabtree County Park. From the hotel access drive, simply head south along Aviation Parkway, cross I-40, and turn left on Winstead Drive. Here, you'll find an access road that meanders through Lake Crabtree County Park. A few dirt trails off-shoot from the main road, but they're nowhere near as long or "jogger friendly" as Umstead's.
Athletic-minded guests must look to workout alternatives beyond the hotel since HGI's on-site gym is a small room with some new cardio equipment, a multistation, medicine balls and dumbbells. The pool is not lap worthy. Our suggestion is to drive 5 minutes to O2 Fitness where you'll be met with a fantastic health club experience (everything but a pool, swimmers should consider Campus Hills or Pullen). HGI guests don't receive an admission discount, so you'll have to fork over $10/day.
The accommodation itself is very pleasing to the senses. The surrounding area is wooded and serene. The indoor common areas are bright, open, and airy. And the rooms are spacious. The guest quarters will not be nominated for any style awards, but they do have high speed internet access connections and ergonomic work stations.
