OPP is one of our favorites for all of Raleigh/Durham, especially during the summer months when the bubble roof is deflated and outdoor swimming commences. While it's located in North Raleigh, and obviously convenient for those in the immediate area, we would consider driving here for a lap swim from 10 miles away, especially in the summer since it's one of the only quality outdoor facilities around.
Short course is the pattern of choice for most lap swim hours. But the pool is Olympic-size, so count on 12 to 15 lanes of 25-yards. Backstroke flags are overhead, pace clocks are on deck, and toys are available. Check the website for hours - both open swim and lap swimming - as they change by season.
Raleigh Area Masters Teams alternate between this pool and Pullen Aquatic, so you may be able to drop in with them for a workout, registered US Masters swimmers are definitely allowed and others should call in advance to confirm. If you're under 54, it's $7/day and for those above, it's $5.
