Breaking up is hard to do...with Whole Foods

We try to show discipline. We even avoid going too often.  But alas, we can't resist what others often don't have.

Whole Foods Market is smart. Its 365 Brand's reasonable pricing lures cost conscious shoppers into the store. And once they are "in", they buy MORE, whole-paycheck style. We do. It's how our small basket adds up to 3 figures in a shopping nano second. BUT if one sticks to sales, Whole Foods can be VERY reasonable!

So what are some products that we love to buy there especially when on sale?

A recipe worth sharing: Shrimp, Chorizo & Corn Salad

Wow. We were right!

When we saw this recipe in our Cooking Light Magazine, we were intrigued. We love shrimp, and we know that a small amount of Spanish chorizo can go a long way toward adding robust flavor.  Other favorite ingredients were also listed: sriracha, basil, green onion, garlic and lemon juice. This dish was begging to be made.

Another Salad Dressing that makes the Athletic-Minded "Cut"

Wow! That was our reaction when we tried out the Caesar Parmigiano Yogurt salad dressing from Bolthouse Farms. We are salad connoisseurs and sampling dressings is a team hobby. But we refuse to stock our fridge with any calorie, salt or sugar bombs. The result is that many dressings under perform in our rigorous taste tests.

The HCG Diet, an unconventional journey to better health. Part one.

Editor's Note: This is the first in a 3 part series detailing one person’s experience with the HCG Diet, a weight-loss method that has sparked controversy among doctors, media and the general medical community. Named the "HCG Diet" because followers inject themselves daily with the human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG), a hormone produced by pregnant women. Detractors such as Mehmet Oz of Oprah fame argue that trial studies show that HCG is no more effective than a placebo.

The healthy salad dressing hall of fame

I enjoy a monster size salad for dinner each night. As our media expert commented, it's more like a casserole--layers of veggies, protein, and greens.  My 3 to 4 pound garden wouldn't come together without awesome dressings.  And because my salad "flavors" vary, I require dressing variety.

Unfortunately most dressings are either calorie and sodium bombs or just don't taste good.  I've discovered 7 that are excellent in taste and are super sensible in nutrition. I thought I'd share the salad dressing knowledge wealth!

Comfort Food Cop-Out

I feel vindicated. For the last couple of years, I have bristled, grumbled and ranted about all the new "gourmet comfort food" restaurants.  It seems that every time a new place opened, the menu catered to this new food trend. For healthy eaters, those who are skilled cooks, and for those who lean toward clean food, these menus offer little.

Get the junk out of school. Bill passes and we investigate.

Question: How much money does it take to up the health quotient of the food served in our nation's public schools and feed more low-income children?

Answer: $4.5 billion -- over 10 years.

Today, the Senate approved the "Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act" which seeks, among other things, to make food served in public schools more healthy.

Are you a healthy parent? Part Two: Way of Life. Be a role model.

This is a timely topic -- maybe because First Lady Michelle Obama has made it so. How can we be more healthy as families? It must start with us -- the parents.

In our first post, we cited some interesting statistics/anecdotes about healthy living.

Healthy Parenting. Part One: Food

We introduced this topic in a recent post, where we readily admit that defining "healthy" is not easy. We are exploring the topic in the context of four categories. The first is food.

Above all, before anything else, we think it is imperative to:
1. Get educated about food
2. Get the "crap" out of the house
3. Be patient.
And if you aren't sure what the "crap" is, see #1 above.

Food companies are getting smart about healthy eating.

The two BEST pieces of advice for getting healthy?

1. Exercise first thing in the morning. If you miss some sleep, so be it. Studies prove that morning movers stick to their workout routines, get better sleep, and have an easier time staying healthy the rest of the day.
